RM - FP7-ENV-2008-1 Cooperation Work Programme 2008: Environment <25Feb08

Identifier: FP7-ENV-2008-1 Budget: € 212 000 000 Deadline: 25 February 2008
Area 6.1.3.1. Hazard assessment, triggering factors and forecasting
ENV.2008.1.3.1.1. Development of a common methodology and tools to evaluate earthquake hazard in Europe
There is a need to create, for Europe, a unified framework for seismic hazard assessment and
to produce an integrated European probabilistic seismic hazard assessment (PSHA) model and
specific scenario based modelling tools. This should serve as a reference for national zonation
as well as seismic safety for the industry sector. The framework should include homogeneous
standards, procedures, harmonized inputs and parameters for a regional hazard assessment,
including models for seismic sources, activity rates and ground-motion attenuation. The most
appropriate return periods and ground-motion parameters for design for built environment for
ultimate and damage-limit states should be evaluated. Methods must be developed based on
the latest scientific understanding of the earthquake processes and seismic wave propagation.
Participation of countries from the southern Mediterranean area is encouraged. (Policy
relevant topic)
Funding scheme: collaborative projects (small or medium-scale focused research
projects)
Expected impact: The Eurocode 8 on Design of structures for earthquake resistance
will gradually take over for national standards in the period 2007-2010. However, its
provisions for seismic safety constructions are based on national seismic hazard
zonations. As a result, seismic hazard is assessed in Europe in a variety of uneven and
incompatible ways in different countries and different sectors (may differ by more than

Trust & Standards

   1. Summary of report   2.         1. Purpose         2. There are two main purposes of this report: the first is to review the current standards and specifications which exist or are being developed, which are relevant for the establishment of Europe-wide trusted services; the second is to put forward a roadmap for future standards development work.         3. Status## The area of standards development is always changing: existing standards are improved; new standards are introduced. This report refers to the state of standards and specifications activities at the beginning of April 1997. The report has been produced following review of work in a number of standards related organisations:    *          o International Standards Organisation (ISO)          o Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF)          o European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI)          o European Committee for Standardisation (CEN).## The environment in which standards are produced and the motivations for standards have been considered. The work of a number of industry groups has also been reviewed.A number of projects funded by the European Commission have also been reviewed, in order to identify possible action to bring their results into the standards area.   1.         1. Priorities for action         2. The main conclusions of the report and recommendations for action fall under two headings: content of standards and processes for their production. A more detailed roadmap is within the report. The underlying conclusion is that the technical standards, while not completely and formally ratified, are well advanced; what is required is a focus on implementation of applications using trusted services.

Building Trust and Confidence in Business Netwoks

Building Trust

Trust is an essential basis for a productive, satisfying and fun business information and communication environment. Suspicion corrodes working relationships and undermines people’s confidence in themselves and their colleagues. Leaders need to offer trust, since the only way to prove whether others are trustworthy or not is by experience. Organizational leaders have nearly all the power, so it’s usually up to them to set the ball rolling. Trust is always a gift. As a leader, you need to be the one who begins the giving process.

What does it take to initiate a process of trust? Courage, certainly, and the willingness to take a risk. Employees who have been denied trust, maybe for years, don’t find it easy to accept responsibility in an instant. You’ll need to help them rebuild their confidence in themselves. You’ll probably have to deal with more than few cynics as well: people who claim to approve the idea of trust, yet constantly find reasons why it shouldn’t be this person, in this circumstance, at this time.

Risks versus Rewards
There are always risks involved in offering trust. Some people—very few, in my experience—will consciously abuse your trust. If so, you may also need the courage and wisdom to refuse to allow the actions of a tiny minority to shape the way you deal with everyone. Others may stumble and betray your trust without intending to. You need to be willing to show them mercy and provide help, not instant condemnation. It’s easy to focus primarily on the negative possibilities: the people who will not live up to the trust placed in them. In reality, the potential for positive outcomes is high enough to tilt the balance of advantage that way.

Subject:

Experience shows that first responders will have the most important role in the early response to different types of emergencies (e.g. conventional, radiation, chemical, etc.). Their ability to respond efficiently will have the critical influence to protection of life, health and property, to prevention of escalation of the emergency and to response and rehabilitation at the later stage. Providing the first responders with adequate knowledge and training, equipment and tools developed in line with best international practice and novel technologies will ensure the effective first response

Enterprise 2.0 Finland

Enterprise 2.0 - Finland

Let me comment about the social media and enterprise 2.0 applications in Finland. We’re a group of 20 people, academics, consultants, knowledge workers, writing a book about the evolution and use of Web 2.0 and social media in SME’s and large companies.

I’m writing about “Virtual Organizations 1970 – 2010”. The idea is to span pre-web 2.0 social media and networking tools and applications and compare them to the easy to use and cost-effective tools of the present Web 2.0.

There is a big change in the making. Large companies like Nokia are opening up, changing from command – control towards co-creation and collaboration, even beyond. Working together on a global scale is key to success.

The borders of the company are becoming more fluent. The Prosumer idea is invading business processes. Prosumers are more and more participating in the making of the whole supply chain. We see much more self-servicing and do-it-yourself.

The SME Enterprises can be big beneficiaries while they can multiple their size through global open innovation and co-operation with partners and clients.

The future Virtual Organizations will be much different in their working styles. Strangers from all over the world can embrace a common goal and start to work out new solutions. People who hasn’t met before, face to face, write the book. Our meeting place is a working platform with wikies and blogs. The work process and collaboration is very fluent.

CIP ICT - PSP - ICT PSP Work Programme 2007

Objective 4.4: Privacy protection infrastructure
Funding instrument: Thematic network- it is intended to support one thematic network
The issue of privacy protection is an important horizontal concern that goes across eHealth, Inclusion and eGovernment services. eHealth services deal with highly personal patient information; eInclusion data might include personally identifiable information on an individual's physical abilities and social situation; and eGovernment services bring together a rich collection of citizen related information.
In the provision of eServices in the European Information Society, data and privacy protection
are fundamental rights enshrined in European directives (1995/46/EC and 2002/58/EC), which have been transposed into national laws. Trustworthiness with respect to the use and dissemination of personally identifiable data is a prerequisite for secure interactions in eGovernment, eHealth, eInclusion, eBusiness, eBanking and other eServices. Some of the available information needs to be exchanged to be effective, while other should be excluded from unwarranted sharing.
The objective is to facilitate the emergence of an open European-wide trusted eServices market with dynamic compositions of services that reconciles different national privacy policies and offers user-oriented technical means to allow the user to define privacy profiles, and to monitor and control their enforcement and propagation.
It is intended to support one thematic network for the deployment and adoption of userempowering
privacy protection services across Europe (ref. the Communications on the secure information society COM(2006) 251, and on privacy enhancing technologies – in preparation).

CALL FOR PAPERS

Submissions Deadline: January 15, 2007

(early submission recommended)

With the development of more complex networking systems and the rapid transition to the e-world, information security has become a real concern for many individuals and organizations. Advanced safeguards are required to protect the information assets of not only large but also small and distributed enterprises. New approaches to information security management, such as policies and certifications, are now being required. The security of strategic corporate information has become the foremost concern of many organizations, and in order to assure this security, methods and techniques must be conceptualized for small enterprises both from a functional and technical viewpoint.
