Objectives:

• Identify and assess key studies, initiatives, best practices and existing legal tools in order to elaborate strategies and recommendations for actions to improve capacity building, preparedness and resilience of the society in the context of natural hazards.

• Identify and assess the existent gaps in research in the natural hazards technological fields.

• Education on disaster prevention and awareness raising of the society as a means to improve social perception and change behaviour needs to be considered in a multidisciplinary context.

I have seen that there is an Institute at the CNR in Perugia that work specifically on extreme events (Istituto di Ricerca per la protezione idrogeologica). Maybe we could contact them to see if they want to join the project as they are experts in natural hazards.

Natural hazards research is an elementary component to guide and support the mplementation of the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction and its framework or action (2005-2015), using a multidisciplinary and integrated approach. At uropean level, research will contribute to related environmental Commission activities, such as the European civil protection programme, and to other European ommission research programmes more related to crisis management for natural isasters. It is therefore necessary to consider a robust and comprehensive framework hat enables, for individual hazards and for multi-hazards, the integration of the risk reduction chain. Such an approach is necessary for any risk management as well as for the development of prevention and mitigation strategies.
