This will include plant and microbial genomics and metabolomics to improve the productivity and composition of raw materials and biomass feedstocks for optimised conversion to high added value products including biological resources utilisable in pharmaceutical industry and medicine, while exploiting natural or enhanced terrestrial organisms as novel sources. 

This will fully incorporate life cycle analysis of biomass production practices, transportation, and storage and
market deployment of bio-products.

Area 6.3.1.3. Waste
ENV.2008.3.1.3.1. Waste prevention: Industrial networking and zero-waste entrepreneurship

The development of innovative technologies, waste-prevention methodologies, strategies and system tools (e.g. eco-design, local industrial clusters, and resource exchange) exportable into other European and worldwide contexts shall represent the main focus of this action.

The goal is to develop a structured and innovative production model for resource-use optimisation and waste prevention, also taking residues as secondary raw materials, and test it in real cases of
sustainable industrial networks.

Results should translate the vision of a sustainable development into elements of a sustainable entrepreneurship, focusing at enhancing business opportunities according to a "towards zero waste" approach.

This action should also be capable to provide evidence and directions on how to implement the main EU policy FP 7 Cooperation Work Programme 2008: Environment (including climate change) initiatives in this area (Sustainable Consumption and Production, ETAP, Eco-label, EMAS, Waste Framework Directive, ELV Directive) in a coherent, integrated, and sustainability oriented way, inter alia by identifying and assessing policy measures that could be taken at EU, national or regional levels to favour the development and the uptake of industrial networking and zero-waste entrepreneurship and achieve waste prevention.

Assessment studies shall be carried out13. This action should foresee a substantial participation of
industrial partners, with a relevant presence of SMEs. Additionally, this project should establish links with other projects addressing innovative product chains with a Life Cycle Approach (i.e. biorefineries). (Policy relevant topic)

Funding scheme: collaborative project (large-scale integrating project)

Climate change, rising oil prices and a concern for future supplies, have led to a growing interest in the potential of using biomass for energy purposes. In December 2005 the European Commission adopted an Action Plan designed to increase the use of energy from forestry, agriculture and waste materials.

The European Commission is now focusing on transport, which is responsible for around 21% of the EU's harmful greenhouse gas emissions.

A wide range of actions is already being taken. Vehicle manufacturers are developing new models that are cleaner and more fuel efficient. Efforts are being made to improve public transport and rationalise the transportation of goods.

Biofuels can also make a contribution. Processed from biomass, a renewable resource, biofuels are a direct substitute for traditional petrol and diesel and can readily be integrated into fuel supply systems. Biofuels could also help prepare the way for other advanced transport fuel alternatives.

Objectives: In this theme determined for the Community action, the overarching aim is to:

- research activities carried out in different forms of trans-national cooperation in different forms across the European Union and beyond, and address major challenges confronted by energy systems;
- adapt the current fossil-fuel-based energy system into a more sustainable one, less dependent of imported fuels, based on multiple and in particular renewable and non-polluting energy sources and carriers. Emphasis will be placed on developing less- and non-CO2 emitting energy technologies and on enhancing energy efficiency by rationalising use and storage of energy. The pressing challenges of energy supply security and climate change will be adressed, whilst increasing the competitiveness of Europe's energy industries.

OUR TELECONFERENCE TODAY with some creative Storytelling included...

We had a conference meeting over Skype today about Wp1 and Wp2. Ferran wanted to cover some urgent questions. He will be negotiating with Catalonia next week. I try to figure out what we covered. One of the participants represented information technology from Bulgaria.

Ferran continuous, “This is how to transfer all the knowledge to correspond with European Innova.”

The generation of the basic information and let it grow into basic knowledge, to include the knowledge stake holders. We talk about actors, participants, trainers, coaches, mentors and incubators participating in an annual European contest. “What do they want from this service?”
